Dr Weiner Webinar 7.26 (4 x 3 in)

On Wednesday, July 8th ICOY hosted a webinar with Dr. Dana Weiner where she presented an update on the Children’s Behavioral Health Transformation Initiative in Illinois. She highlighted progress made over the past few years since the blueprint was developed in 2022.

Dr. Weiner, who is stepping down from her role as chief children’s behavioral health officer, discussed the implementation of 12 strategic recommendations across various state agencies, including the launch of the Beacon tool in January 2025 which has served 34,000 visitors and provided navigational assistance to 1,905 families within 24 hours.

Key accomplishments included centralizing residential capacity tracking, developing predictive risk models for behavioral health crises with 82% accuracy, implementing early mental health screenings in public schools (required for grades 3-12 starting in 2028), and expanding in-home behavioral health aids for families of youth with autism spectrum disorders and mental health challenges. The presentation covered cost savings of over $105 million by linking families to community-based services instead of residential treatment, reduced psychiatric hospitalization time, and improved family satisfaction with new processes.

Dr. Weiner outlined next steps including a 30-page sustainability plan being reviewed by state agency leaders, continued leadership transition with new appointments expected by July 16th, and ongoing work to support schools in implementing universal mental health screenings through technology, partnerships, and technical assistance.
