Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month. SAMHSA. New Year, New Beginnings. Treatment works! Find the path that works for you. Findtreatment.gov

During January, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) observes Substance Use Disorder Month. This is a time dedicated to raising awareness about effective treatment options and supporting individuals and communities impacted by substance use disorders. The Capacity Building Initiatives team at ICOY would also like to recognize this month in honor of the work completed by our team to support family stability and recovery across Illinois.

For nearly a decade, ICOY had led a statewide project entitled Intact Family Recovery (IFR). Intact Family Recovery (IFR) is a collaborative model that brings together child welfare and addiction treatment to help keep children safe and families together. ICOY aims to make the IFR model the standard approach to care for families that are experiencing SUD in Illinois and across the country. In recognition of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Month, ICOY would like to highlight the work that has been done to keep hundreds of families together affected by substance misuse throughout the state of Illinois.

At its core, Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month is about reducing harm caused by substance use while promoting hope, healing, and access to care. By increasing awareness, combating stigmas, fostering compassion, and supporting treatment and recovery efforts, we can strengthen individuals, families, and communities.

This observance is an opportunity to recognize and uplift:

  • People considering or seeking treatment for their substance use disorder
  • Practitioners treating substance use disorder
  • Friends, family, and loved ones of those with substance use disorder

By raising awareness, the treatment community seeks to:

  • Eliminate the social stigma surrounding treatment, including medications used to treat substance use disorder
  • Encourage those on their treatment and recovery journey
  • Promote best practices such as screening, intervention, and treatment of substance disorders by health care providers.

Special Presentation:

In recognition of Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month, the ICOY and the Intact Family Recovery Project leadership team will be hosting a presentation for our IFR partners led by Charisse Montgomery, an experienced treatment specialist. The session will review Illinois drug testing regulations and drug and alcohol limits, discuss realistic treatment expectations, and address the complexities of supporting individuals with polysubstance use disorders. The presentation also reinforced compliance requirements and best practices for the child welfare and treatment sectors, strengthening partners’ ability to effectively support individuals and families engaged in recovery services.

Acknowledgment:

Thank you to our statewide child welfare and treatment providers who have partnered with ICOY to provide Intact Family Recovery services to children and families throughout the state of Illinois!
