SUMMARY:Child Welfare Coalition Call
DESCRIPTION:Join ICOY and other member organizations on a call to discuss key changes in the child welfare and youth-led arena. \nThe goal is to create a child welfare system that prepares youth to become successful and self-sufficient. Illinois Collaboration on Youth (ICOY) seeks to focus the attention of Illinois’ elected officials in all branches of government on the systematic challenges facing the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the private agencies that deliver many of the services within their communities. \nWe work continuously with lawmakers and other stakeholders to educate them about the impact of nearly two decades of neglect of this system\, and to advocate for the investments and reforms that are needed to fund and sustain the community-based providers of child welfare services. \nThese calls will take place twice a month and we are asking that all participants register to join.

SUMMARY:Trauma Talks: Youth and Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:In this training we will explore primary traumas that youth are facing. Together we will identify signs to look for in youth that may be experiencing some of these challenges. From there we will process the ways that mental health challenges can be harmful if untreated. Finally\, we will recognize the role we play and develop tools to support a healing process.\n***Please note this training has been chosen as a learning and discussion opportunity in relation to Mental Health Awareness Month. Please note these trainings may include sensitive material and self-disclosure from participants. Facilitators will include content warnings for prepared materials and encourage self-care while interacting with these materials. For any additional needs or resources please reach out to our team at trauma_initatives@icoyouth.org \nAbout the facilitator: \nMarlee Goodman (she/her) – Marlee Goodman has a strong foundation in direct service\, with experience in grief\, affinity spaces and identity\, community building\, and advocacy. Currently serving as a Training + Trauma Specialist\, and LGBTQ+ Liaison at ICOY\, she leads CARES\, ICOY’s for-hire Trauma-Informed Services\, and facilitates training and capacity-building to support service providers with gaining tools\, skills\, and knowledge about trauma-informed care. As an LGBTQ+ Liaison she ensures that ICOY is meeting the needs of organizations serving queer children\, youth\, families\, and service providers across the state. Marlee use trauma-informed principles\, restorative and reparative models\, and intersectionality to guide every aspect of her work. Her approach to content and facilitation is rooted in her commitment to supporting organizations in their journey to not only dismantle oppressive systems\, but to center communities in making healing accessible and sustainable. \nPlease note\, this event/training is not affiliated with or in partnership with IDHS. SUMMARY:ICOY Child Welfare Coalition
DESCRIPTION:Join ICOY and other member organizations on a call to discuss key changes in the child welfare and youth-led arena. The goal is to create a child welfare system that prepares youth to become successful and self-sufficient. Illinois Collaboration on Youth (ICOY) seeks to focus the attention of Illinois’ elected officials in all branches of government on the systematic challenges facing the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the private agencies that deliver many of the services within their communities. We work continuously with lawmakers and other stakeholders to educate them about the impact of nearly two decades of neglect of this system\, and to advocate for the investments and reforms that are needed to fund and sustain the community-based providers of child welfare services. These calls will take place twice a month and we are asking that all participants register to join.

SUMMARY:Briefing on Adolescent Domestic Battery in Illinois
DESCRIPTION:Members are invited to a briefing on Friday\, April 25th at 1PM by law students at Loyola’s Legislation and Policy Clinic on Adolescent Domestic Battery. Family conflict drives a significant number of youth arrests and enmeshes families in the juvenile justice system. However\, this approach does not produce positive outcomes for youth\, families\, or communities. \nThe law students have been researching potential statutory changes to allow and encourage alternative approaches that can produce better outcomes. \nThis discussion will focus on what we know about “adolescent domestic battery” and how we can change Illinois law\, particularly the “Minors Requiring Authoritative Intervention” section of the Juvenile Court Act\, to encourage referrals to youth services providers and provision of services\, such as Comprehensive Community-Based Youth Services (CCBYS)\, to address family needs and strengths. After the presentation\, everyone is welcome to share any concerns or questions to address issues or possibly find better approaches.
