Special Education, School Discipline and the Overrepresentation of Youth with Disabilities in the Justice System
October 29 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
This training hosted by the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission and Equip for Equality will provide participants with an overview of the basic rights of youth with disabilities in school settings and how the failure to meet the needs of these young people leads to their overrepresentation in the juvenile and criminal justice systems. We will then look at the various impacts of disabilities on youth in the justice system and how system players can advocate for these most vulnerable young people.
Presenters: Jessica Gingold (Staff Attorney at Equip for Equality) & Rachel Shapiro (Supervising Attorney at Equip for Equality)
