Briefing on Adolescent Domestic Battery in Illinois
April 25 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Members are invited to a briefing on Friday, April 25th at 1PM by law students at Loyola’s Legislation and Policy Clinic on Adolescent Domestic Battery. Family conflict drives a significant number of youth arrests and enmeshes families in the juvenile justice system. However, this approach does not produce positive outcomes for youth, families, or communities.
The law students have been researching potential statutory changes to allow and encourage alternative approaches that can produce better outcomes.
This discussion will focus on what we know about “adolescent domestic battery” and how we can change Illinois law, particularly the “Minors Requiring Authoritative Intervention” section of the Juvenile Court Act, to encourage referrals to youth services providers and provision of services, such as Comprehensive Community-Based Youth Services (CCBYS), to address family needs and strengths. After the presentation, everyone is welcome to share any concerns or questions to address issues or possibly find better approaches.
